Anyone who has heard of Jesus has an opinion of who He was. Some say
He was just a good teacher. This option is not possible because of the
fact that he claimed to be God and commanded things contrary to the times.
Others claim that He was nothing more than an extraordinary prophet. This
is disproved again by the fact that he claimed to be God and also that
he encouraged others to believe that He was. No other true prophet would
dare commit such blasphemy. This leaves us with three basic options. Jesus
was either lying, crazy, or He was telling the truth that He really was
and is God.
Lets begin by analyzing the facts in relation to the possibility that
He was simply lying His whole life like many do today. First of all, Jesus
has the complete opposite psychological profile of a pathological liar.
Liars have certain consistent attributes such as lying to get what they
want, or inability to speak with depth and truth. Jesus spoke truths that
are still incomprehensible to their complete depth even to the deepest
of theologians. He conveyed such truths through His teachings as it's
the motive that matters, the action simply follows, and, love God with
all you are and love your neighbor as yourself and you will do right.
But the most tangible evidences that He wasn't lying are the great number
of undeniable miracles He performed and also the resurrection.
Could he possibly then be a man who simply thought Himself to be God and
belonged in the loony bin. The evidence is against it. First of all, Jesus
was absolutely emotionally stable. People who are missing a few screws
usually crack hard under pressure. Jesus endured a scourging, a beating,
a trial or two, and crucifixion and remained in complete control of His
self. Read the accounts in the gospels of Jesus last few hours and you
will see that He was probably even more emotionally stable that most people.
But aside from stability under pressure, He spoke with great clarity,
power and eloquence with amazing insights into human nature. One example
of this is when the Pharisees sent out the temple guards to arrest Jesus
and they came back without Him saying, "No one ever spoke the way
this man does" (John. 7:46). He amazed the guards to the point that
they probably then believed that He was the messiah. Thirdly, Jesus backed
up what He said. He claimed to be God and performed many miracles and
did exactly as He said He would do, rise from the grave three days after
His death. Fourthly, he didn't make people feel uncomfortable around Him
at any time. People who are a few tacos short of a combo plate and aren't
playing with a full deck (lights on but nobody's home routine) don't exactly
have close friends. Usually those who like a train without a conductor
make people feel nervous and anxious and even a little scared sometimes.
The final point of evidence against Jesus being mentally insane is by
analyzing His life in comparison to the symptoms of divinity complex.
Someone who has a divinity complex (who really thinks they're god or a
god) is egotistical, narcissistic, self absorbed, and unable to relate
to others. Jesus was that most humble, loving, caring, self-sacrificing
man to have ever lived who helped thousands deal with real pain and real
problems in their lives.
