"As unlikely as a man rising from the dead may seem, you have to
weigh that against how unlikely it would be to have all the various historical
evidences for its occurrence if it never actually took place."
The resurrection is what really separates Christianity from all other
religions. It has a totally different starting place. Most, perhaps all,
other religions are based on teachings that may not be proven true or
false by way of physical evidence. Christianity, however is based on an
actual event, that if true, validates all that it teaches and if false
leaves no Christianity at all. Christianity is not a religion with hidden
beginnings. In Acts 26: 26 Paul, referring to the crucifixion and resurrection,
says, "The king [Agrippa] is familiar with these things, and I can
speak freely to him. I am convinced that none of this has escaped his
notice, because it was not done in a corner." Mohammed fled from
Mecca and received the Koran from God in a cave. Buddha left his family
and became enlightened. Christianity is the only one whose beginnings
were extremely public and verifiable historically.
But, before we go there, what impact does the crucifixion and resurrection
have on our lives today? Rom. 1:2-5 quotes, "the gospel he promised
beforehand through his prophets in the Holy Scriptures regarding His Son,
who as to his human nature was a descendant of David, and who through
the Spirit of holiness was declared with power to be the Son of God by
His resurrection from the dead: Jesus Christ our Lord. Through Him and
for His name's sake, we received grace and apostleship to call people
from among all the Gentiles to the obedience that comes from faith."
And also, Rom. 4: 24-25 says, "but also for us, to whom God will
credit righteousness - for us who believe in Him who raised Jesus our
Lord from the dead. He was delivered over to death for our sins and was
raised to life for our justification.." Jesus took our punishment
for us and by sacrificing Himself for us made all who would believe holy
and just in God's sight, but only if He was God could He have accomplished
this incredible feat.
