Errors
There are many arguments in favor of an errorless Bible. One fact that
most forget is that the errors would be in the copies, should any show
up, not in the originals. The evidence for this is that not one error
has ever been demonstrated to extend to the original text. There are many
other facts to take into consideration. For one, God cannot error. If
the Bible is the word of God then it must be without error. Two evidences
that the Bible is the word of God is that Jesus affirmed the Old Testament
and the apostle's lives were a testament to their inspiration. The church
also has, once the cannon was established, never argued over the included
documents inspiration. Besides, I don't think God has a stuttering problem.
Biblical "errors" must be approached with caution because of
the weight of the effect of "disproof." It must be stated that
the unexplained is the unexplainable. If the Bible doesn't explain something
such as the trinity etc., then it must be assumed that God either left
that to us to figure out or that we just aren't meant to figure it out.
Hermeneutics is the science and art of Biblical interpretation. It sets
out the rules that guard from misinterpretation. There are common errors
that people make that go against basic hermeneutical principals. There
are five main ones. One, people assume that no change has happened in
copying or in translation. Two, people take verses and ideas out of context
to cater to their needs. The most common instance of this is saying, "Money
is the root of all evil," when in truth the verse is "The love
of money is a root of all kinds of evil." Three, people assume that
different accounts are false. An example is in Matthew 28: 5 it says that
there was one angel at the tomb whereas in John 20:12 it says that there
were two angels. Both could be true or one less informed than the other.
But the number of angels is a moot point because both record there were
angels there and also it is a non-doctrinal issue. How many angels were
there has little to nothing to do with the fact that Jesus wasn't there,
that He had risen. Four, some people assume that the Bible approves all
it records. The Bible records murder, fornication, adultery, and just
about every other sin there is to commit, this doesn't mean that we should
follow suit. The truth of the Bible is what it reveals, not what it records.
Finally, five, people forget that only the originals were errorless. Example:
Y#$ hav ! dog, You !ave A D#G, You have a Dog. The truth of each statement
is constant despite "errors." In fact most every "error"
in the Bible is simply on of grammar or syntax. The truth never changes.
